Our Story

Why did we start Frontier Psychiatry?

Frontier Psychiatry was created in 2019 by passionate psychiatrists who believe that every community deserves access to great psychiatric care.

We feel that smaller, underserved communities are often overlooked or overcharged by larger telepsychiatry companies looking to grow their business quickly.  We know that one-size-fits-all telepsychiatry does not work.

As a result, we decided to launch Frontier Psychiatry by collaborating with healthcare organizations in rural states, starting with Montana, working with local partners to assess and overcome regional barriers to care.

Rural states like Montana, Wyoming and Alaska consistently suffer the worst suicide rates in the US.  This health disparity needs to be eliminated.  Vulnerable populations, including military Veterans and Native American communities, are disproportionately affected.

We also recognize that psychiatry training programs often don’t prepare trainees with the requisite skills to deliver high quality virtual clinical care.  Telepsychiatry is central to expanding access to care for everyone.

Frontier Psychiatry is dedicated to training and supervising future psychiatrists by offering virtual clinical rotations to ensure that tomorrow’s mental health workforce is prepared to meet the challenges associated with providing care to all communities.

Addressing Barriers to Care

Mental illness is a very prevalent problem in America. One out of every 25 adults has experienced some form of serious mental illness in a given year, but that number skyrockets for those living in rural areas. These folks face unique barriers when it comes time seek treatment. A recent report explored the three biggest obstacles to connecting rural and remote populations with mental health care: 1) Availability, 2) Accessibility, and 3) Acceptability. Since our founding, we have worked to address these three barriers in every aspect of our work.

Where are our patients located?

Being a fully virtual clinic allows us to see patients anywhere in the world that has an internet connection. However, we've chosen to place our focus on Montana and are currently seeing patients spread throughout the state. As Montanans ourselves, we have a unique understanding of the challenges Montanans face when looking for proper mental health care and aim to make psychiatry accessible to every Montanan by 2025.
