Care is delivered by Frontier Psychiatry's 13 Idaho-licensed prescribers: 4 psychiatrists, 1 board-certified addiction medicine physician, 4 psychiatric nurse practitioners and 4 physician assistants. A licensed clinical pharmacist supports your care and does not prescribe.

A psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant does the same core work a psychiatrist does: evaluates you, makes a diagnosis, prescribes medication and adjusts it over time.

We Treat

What we treat

Frontier Psychiatry treats the conditions below in children from age 2, teenagers and adults, anywhere in Idaho, by video, with medication management when it is clinically appropriate.

Depression and mood disorders

Weeks of flat mornings, and nothing you used to enjoy landing. Major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder and seasonal depression.

Anxiety and panic

A mind that will not shut off at night, or a heart that races with no warning. Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Adult ADHD

Missed deadlines, unfinished projects, a working memory that keeps dropping things. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder diagnosed in adulthood.

Child and adolescent ADHD

Notes home from school, homework that takes three hours, a child who cannot sit still. ADHD in children and teenagers.

PTSD and trauma

Sleep broken by the same memory, and a startle response that will not settle. Post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma-related conditions.

Substance use disorders

Drinking or using more than you meant to, for longer than you meant to. Alcohol, opioid, stimulant and other substance use disorders.

Addiction medicine

Frontier Psychiatry treats substance use disorders alongside the mental health conditions that usually come with them.

PRESCRIBING RULES

Buprenorphine can be prescribed by telehealth under federal rules that have no expiration date.
‍
Stimulants and other controlled substances follow a different set of rules, which carry a date. See the controlled substances note further down this page.

Who we see

The access problem in Idaho is real, measurable, and documented. These are the numbers that shape how we built the practice.

Parents looking for a child psychiatrist

We are accepting new patients and we see children from age 2. You do not need a referral or a prior diagnosis. The first visit runs 60 minutes and a parent or guardian takes part, so you hear the plan at the same time your child does.

People who have never had psychiatric care

The barrier here is usually not knowing what a visit is like. It is 60 minutes by video, and it is a conversation about what has been going on, what you have already tried, and what you want to change. There is nothing you need to prepare.

People who are not yet sure what they need

Maybe it is depression, maybe it is sleep, maybe it is something else. You do not have to know before you book. The evaluation is how that question gets answered, and you leave the first visit knowing whether treatment would help and what kind.

People in treatment who are not improving

If you have been in treatment and it is not working, we can offer a second opinion and a different approach. Our Idaho team includes a board-certified addiction medicine physician, so a case that needs different expertise can get it here.

People coming from their primary care team

Primary care handles a lot of behavioral health, and often that is enough. When a case needs psychiatric specialty care, we work from where your provider got to instead of starting over. Bring your medication list and we will take it there.

People whose previous clinician moved on

Clinicians leave, and in Idaho it happens often enough. Bring your current medication list with doses, your pharmacy, and the date of your last visit. Your clinician reviews what you take and decides with you what to continue or change.

People who cannot take time off from work

Dairy and farm work, construction, food processing, logging, health care shifts. A 30-minute follow-up by video does not cost you a day. If you travel for work, the visit happens while you are in Idaho, where your clinician is licensed.

People hours from a clinic, and veterans

In much of eastern Idaho, north Idaho and the Magic Valley, the nearest psychiatric prescriber is a long drive that turns a medication check into a lost day. A video visit removes it. We accept TriCare and TriWest VA for veterans too.

People in a designated shortage area

Federal mental health shortage designations in Idaho cover 1.27 million people, in a state of about 2 million. Rural counties make up 88 percent of Idaho's land and 35 of its 44 counties.

Where we see patients in Idaho

Our clinicians are licensed statewide, so where you live does not decide whether you can be seen. We see patients in all 44 Idaho counties, by video.

Boise
Meridian
Nampa
Idaho Falls
Pocatello
Coeur d'Alene
Twin Falls

That includes the Treasure Valley, the Magic Valley, eastern Idaho and north Idaho, and the towns that rarely appear on a provider list: Salmon, Challis, Arco, Kamiah, Bonners Ferry, Rigby, Burley, Weiser, Grangeville and the towns between them. We see patients on the Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene, Fort Hall and Kootenai reservations, and families connected to Mountain Home Air Force Base.

If your town is not on this list, that is only because the list would run for pages.

Who we see

Frontier Psychiatry provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management by secure video. A first appointment is a clinical evaluation. It is not a promise of a diagnosis, a medication, or a prescription for a controlled substance. Telehealth does not cover conditions that require in-person care.

Controlled substances by telehealth

Frontier can prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants for ADHD, by telehealth under DEA flexibilities in effect through December 31, 2026. What happens after that date depends on federal rules that are not final.

Buprenorphine for opioid use disorder is separate: it has its own permanent federal telehealth pathway and does not expire.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You can also text HOME to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line. The Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line are both available 24 hours a day. Frontier Psychiatry does not provide crisis or emergency services.
